Closets Full of Dreams looks into females’ closets, showing girls’ dreams and fears and illustrating their own stories from a society where women are facing danger, sexual harassment and oppression in the street every day.
It is a true story that affects most Egyptian women. They all have one item in their closet that they will never wear again because of the experiences she faces in the street or even behind closed doors of safe spaces.
For me, the closet is a symbol of our minds – if my closet is oppressed by my society then my freedom of speech and self-expression is limited. It’s a simple requirement of being free, it is the freedom to wear what you want.
If you find a society where people cannot wear what they want, then I believe that they also cannot talk and think about all that they want or do not want.
The idea came to me after many personal stories and complaints from my close female friends. They wish to wear dresses and are saddened by storing their nice clothes, unable to wear them because of the fear of the street and society.
