After a lengthy lockdown here in NSW and with summer fast approaching, we’re delighted to be finally counting down to the 12th edition of Head On Photo Festival. Only six weeks to go!
Following a successful digital Festival last year, 2021 will be jam-packed with exciting new photographic exhibitions and informative and enlightening artist talks and workshops, mostly online. We’re planning physical exhibits at Bondi Beach and Paddington, with select events in person (subject to health orders at the time).
We can’t wait to share the Roger the Rat series with you by internationally acclaimed South African photographer Roger Ballen. Employing his familiar yet uncanny black and white aesthetic, Roger explores the human psyche through a whole new persona!

American photographer Neil Kramer’s comedy series of life in lockdown, Quarantine in Queens, with his mother and ex-wife, is an Australian premiere that is sure to bring a smile to your face.

Another Aussie premiere is the Everyday Project’s group exhibition featuring the work of female photographers with Women on the Move. The show highlights the plight of women migrants around the world as they flee their home countries.

And Kurdish photographer and former refugee Younes Mohammad’s world premiere of Kurds Open Wounds documents the sacrifices of Kurdish Peshmerga in the fight to put down ISIS. Confronting and heroic, these intimate portraits of wounded fighters and their families starkly reveal their battles and ongoing struggles in post-conflict life.
We’ll present our yearly favourites – the launch night and announcement of this year’s Head On Photo Awards’ winners across three categories Portrait, Landscape and Student – on Friday, November 19. Don’t miss out. Get your free ticket here.
We’ll bring you online artists’ talks, workshops, and panel discussions designed to stimulate and entertain. Following the NSW Health advice regarding Covid-19 restrictions, we hope to deliver certain events in person.
