Exhibition Description

Photographic surfaces are like a muddy window, when the surface has texture it is hard to move beyond hence we get stuck to the surface of photography’s dirty window like dust carpet.
Focused vision is seeing beyond what we can see, trying to discern what the subject is but failing to comprehend. Vision goes beyond sight, it engages the senses, and the largest sensory organ is touch. We want to imagine what these surfaces feel like, the texture if dirt under our fingers. Pushing the image around, swirling, the image feels unstable, smudges.

Dirt Underneath my Fingernails explores the dynamic tensions between the photograph as a version of reality and as a physical, surface based object. The work is a response to the tactility and materiality of photographic objects as well as the natural environment. These images aim to engage the audience in the act of looking as a multi-sensory experience presented by the photographic medium.

The artist acknowledges the collaborative research, dialogue and textual contributions of Ivana Jovanovic (artist/curator) in the development of the exhibition's creative context.

Artist Bio

Anthony Hodgkinson is a Sydney based artist whose practice explores the concept of treating the photographic medium as a physical object, to record information embedded in the landscape. His work explores both the effects of the physical interaction between the artist and film as an object and the impact of time on the surface of the negative and the photographic print. Hodgkinson completed his Masters of Fine Arts at the National Art School in 2017. His work was selected for the Robin Gibson Gallery New Talent exhibition, has been included group shows throughout Sydney and Berlin.
