In both Islamic and Christian traditions, women are noticeably underrepresented and lack power.

The title of this exhibition, أَفَلَا تَتَفَكَّرُون (Do you not think?) is a part of a Quranic verse. It questions women’s exclusion across many historical narratives, from creation stories to the first family photos of the Qajar, the Iranian royal dynasty. The photographer has retold these events through stylised scenes emphasising form and body and mirroring the background paintings’ aesthetics.

The public bath setting holds relevance as one of many historically important spaces that barred women. The uncanny inclusion of a young girl, out of place in a traditionally male space, highlights women’s absence from these scenes.

The exhibition explores the interconnecting themes of religion, the body, art history, and women’s space within tradition and society.

This exhibition is outdoors. Please check what COVID-19 restrictions are in place before you visit.
