EASTERN THOUGHTS | Head On Photo Festival

Vitor Queiroz & Marta Maia

Exhibition Description

Eastern Thoughts is a series of images of the everyday life, people, objects, and atmosphere Victor Queiroz encountered while traveling through Cambodia, Vietnam and Thailand. He wonders how much the images reveal about the lived experience of local people and of himself and his own expectations and cultural organisation. Once an image is taken it is extracted from the context and the surrounding smells, sounds, temperature, and sensations. Therefore the image is not so much a portal to another culture but a portal to the culture stored inside our body. We travel in hope to learn about another culture but what we discover is the limits of our perception. What we record is what attracts our eye and what we have the capacity to translate. Where is the border of our perception and how wide is the frame? After going through all the processes and avalanches of information during the travel Queiroz found it was only just a glance. In the book accompanying the exhibition, Marta Maia questions our attempts to capture tactical memory as we encounter, seize, memorise, and describe another culture.
