The Head On Landscape Prize and NSW Parliament Landscape Photography Prize was launched in 2013 to encourage a new perspective of an old genre to push creative boundaries and promote work that is informed, but not limited, by traditional practices.

Head On has a broad approach to ‘Landscape’ which encompasses ‘large vista’ images of the natural environment (land or sea), urban or industrial settings. It may include people but are ‘incidental’ rather than the main subject matter.

The works are anonymous through the judging process and as a result, the merit of the work is the focus, bringing together both newly unearthed and established Australian and International talent.

Each year three winners are selected and for the third year running, with the generous support of Desane Group Holdings Ltd, an additional prize is awarded for the best NSW Landscape. The President and Speaker’s acquisitive prizes are new for 2017.

The panel of judges changes each year resulting in exhibitions that are unpredictable and diverse from year to year.

Judges this year were Assistant Curator of Photography at Tate Modern, Shoair Mavlian; Dean of UNSW Art & Design, Ross Harley, Documentary Photographer & Oculi Founder, Dean Sewell; and Head On Photo Festival Director Moshe Rosenzveig.
