Coming of age within regional Queensland is an experience saturated with the images and identifiers of a male dominated culture; where sports, agriculture, and a mantra of “hard yakka” reign supreme. Combining documentary photography with site-specific performance, Sugar explores existing tensions within femininity, womanhood and familial identity.
Performing within the artist’s grandmother’s home, and using tactile objects and materials, the images work to reconcile, reclaim and reflect upon a multidimensional femininity; ultimately asking, “what is it to be feminine in a regional context?”
