An exhibition spanning three decades of work by renowned New Zealand photographer, Laurence Aberhart.

In this age of instantaneous images, Laurence Aberhart’s photography remains more necessary than ever.  His photographs invite us in to a world where time has paused, and the past conflates with the present in a deeper timescale.

Aberhart’s singular vision has remained constant since he began documenting the marae and weatherboard churches of rural New Zealand in the late 1970s.  This exhibition delves into the rich archive of his work, presenting over 70 photographs from 1981 to 2011.  Shot exclusively on an historic camera (a 100 year-old, 8” x 10” Korona), the long exposures imbue his prints with a luminosity and detail rarely seen today.

Born in 1949 in Nelson, Aberhart is one of New Zealand’s most renowned photographers.  His work has been the subject of many exhibitions, including a major survey in 2008 at City Gallery, Wellington, curated by Justin Paton and Gregory Burke and accompanied by a comprehensive monograph, and in 2002 at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.  He is represented in Sydney by Darren Knight Gallery.
