Exhibition Description

Fundraiser for EcoGuinea Foundation Photographs of Mardi Kendall by famous Turkish photographer Bedri Baykam

Wild Thing, You Make My Heart Sing is the story in pictures of the sparks that flew when a Turkish wunderkind with a mop of curly black hair and an American blonde beauty met and fell in love in San Francisco in 1984 – and so much more. It’s a fundraising exhibition for the EcoGuinea Foundation, supporting the people of Guinea, West Africa in recovery from the Ebola outbreak and an expression of the passions of two fascinating people and the cause that has reunited them. Innocent, sexy and delightful, these nude photos say as much about the times they were created in as they do about the artists.

The photographer is Bedri Baykam, one of Turkey’s best-known artists and humanitarians and a self-proclaimed cultural guerilla. His work has been exhibited in more than 125 one-man shows worldwide and his challenge to the western art establishment was the subject of his 1994 book Monkey’s Right to Paint. He is the author of 23 books and has been a central player in the Turkish intellectual and political scene since the 1980s. Bedri is a true force of nature.

The model, Mardi Kendall, 30 at the time of the photos, (Bedri was 27) is a one-time cellist, Parisian model and long-time shiatsu healer and yoga teacher. She has lived around the world but the people of Guinea stole her heart in 2000 where she has found her most impassioned work. EcoGuinea was born in 2009. A community-based charity, Guineans take on essential projects to tackle sub-standard sanitation, actions that have helped many children to survive and thrive. EcoGuinea was at the vanguard of education during the recent Ebola outbreak. This is what Mardi lives for, a cause worthy of “selling her body” and Bedri has joined her in her goal.
