I stood in the pouring rain on a Manhattan intersection for about half an hour waiting for the elements in this photo to come together - a heavy flow of steam from the vents to coincide with traffic at the opposite side of the street for backlight and contrast and an interesting figure to cross the street. I waited and waited, then the woman with the bright red umbrella came across the road - I knew I had the shot. Time to get inside.
I saw him just sitting there quietly in the midst of typical Indian bazaar madness. He saw me and ignored me. I took the photo and didn't think much of it. Later on, I realised how elegant and graceful, yet melancholic he was.
