This image comes from the series ‘Bei Mir Bistu Shein’, which portrays an Orthodox Jewish family represented in three different parts of the world. Shmuley had just had his Bar Mitzvah, representing his transition from boyhood to manhood. The subjects in this series exist in a liminal space between history and modernity creating a dichotomy of the old and new, modernity and tradition. Their essence – people who define their lives by an idea that embodies the physical and the mystical world perhaps more than any other: Faith.
