‘Timeless’ is a story of two star crossed lovers from parallel worlds who try to transcend the fabric of time. Inspired by the timeless and historical architecture of The Rocks as well as the films of Hong Kong film director Wong Kar Wai and his collaboration with Australian cinematographer Christopher Doyle, the scenes from Timeless uses The Rocks as a fitting cinematic backdrop to this love story.

I grew up in Hong Kong at a time when my mother used to wear elegant cheongsam (qipao) dresses with her impressively coiffed hair and my father in his simple but classic tailored suit, and I wanted to create the characters in Timeless from that bygone era in my childhood.

With ‘Timeless’, I wanted to create a fictional photo narrative that felt like the images were taken from the scenes within a film. Each photograph represents a key frame in the story and rather than being a traditional narrative, it instead invites the viewer to interpret and imagine the story behind how the scenes unfold.

The majority of the images have been taken around The Rocks, with other featured locations including Town Hall, Museum Station and the Camperdown cemetery.

Timeless is a multi-faceted exhibition, guiding the viewer into the story using photographs and the written word, together with projected images as well as the use of a digital display to showcase the narrative through cinemagraphs.
