In Mexico, mourning is expressed through colour, sound, costume, music and dance, but also through disturbing masks and the presence of fear; the restlessness is almost familiar and friendly.

Sacred and profane entities become one, just like life and death. Exorcising death with joy and amusement has been consistent throughout pre-Columbian culture.

After all, the saying goes: “to die laughing”. The expression is not a symptom of lightness but proof that men laugh to ward off death.
