Submersion is a series of images that documents the deterioration of species by showing decaying organic matter in water. Placing native deceased insects, specifically delicate butterflies, with decaying eco-material in water communicates the dire consequences of climate change threatening our ecosystems. I chose to focus on the impact of irreversible damage to the environment, particularly the devastation caused by unprecedented weather patterns and how these catastrophic events will impact us all. Fire and floods are now escalating around the world because of dramatic seasonal changes or through deliberate destruction, like the recent eco-genocide of the Kakhovka dam and the Dnipro River in Ukraine. This photographic series presents a porthole, a place to focus on the continuing decimation of nature in all forms. To increase awareness, inform and stimulate debate on the destruction of ecosystems essential for our survival.
Photo-media artist Dr. Debra Livingston taught photography at the Queensland College of Art and the University of the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia. She practises mainly conceptual photography methods, emphasising narrative and biographical concepts for portraits and environmental issues. Debra has widely exhibited locally in Queensland, nationally in Melbourne and Sydney, and internationally in Chelsea, New York (NYC), Florida, Chicago, Paris and India. Her work resides in private and public collections. Published in the US Poets and Artists catalogues, honorary mention in the PX3 Paris Photography Awards, finalist and semi-finalist in the annual Australian Head On Portrait Awards.
