To Set Fire to the Sea explores mandatary immigration detention in Australia. By adopting an expanded documentary approach and incorporating personal narratives with landscapes, objects, reconstruction of memories and ideas to interpret the invisible in this complicated transitional place. This body of work addresses this situation as it plays out in Australia, an already complicated site of migration and belonging, and questions how it interrelates with our national self-image.

Sinead Kennedy is a visual artist whose practice is guided by an interest in photography and social issues. Sinead was awarded the 2017 Pool Grant for her series ‘To Set Fire to the Sea’.
The Pool Grant is an initiative that provides $10,000 and a year of mentorship to an emerging photographer for the fulfilment of a photographic project. This exhibition is supported by The POOL COLLECTIVE.
