Daniele Vita explores the coming of age of a group of children in Catania, Italy. He captures the pivotal time of many firsts; their first kisses, the discovery of sex, trying tobacco or marijuana cigarettes.
Many of Catania’s residents are affected by poverty and social exclusion, mostly living in the ‘quatteri’ (The Neighbourhood). Children in The Neighbourhood grow up quickly. Many engage in illegal activities such as theft or drug dealing to support their mothers and younger siblings after their father was ‘attaccato’ (arrested).
Family is at the core of the social structure, with clear rules and roles to be respected and an indissoluble bond of devotion. This type of ‘respect’ is echoed in mafia culture, which will follow these children into their adult lives.
In the summer, many kids from the most disadvantaged neighbourhoods of Catania go to gather and dive at cliffs. Among the rocks, the photographer captures precious moments of childhood, naivety and dreams of adolescence.

Born in Viterbo, Italy, Daniele Vita has studied anthropology and taken photographs since 1995. He has exhibited widely and been a finalist and winner in many European photo awards. In 2019, Danielle won the Crediamo nei tuoi occhi (We believe in your eyes) prize, with the work Holy Week in Sicily since published as a book. He also won the 1801 Mavi award and received an honourable mention at Unicef Poy 2019. In 2020 he was a finalist at the Italian Street Photo. In 2021 he won first prize in the Future Generations section of the World Report Award XI edition at the Ethic Photography Festival.
