The project focuses on an established genre of Internet sites referred to as Cam Girl sites. In these private interactions the Cam Girls often invite the user to “direct” the model, often in acting out fantasies of a sexual nature. The bedrooms are often made up to resemble sets, adding an element of fantasy and hyper-reality to the imagery.
These images are screen grabs that capture the individuality of the models, and break through the lines that separate actress from woman at home. These idiosyncrasies are often captured in moments of non-performance, and are accentuated by the choice of frames where the Cam Girls are often only partly in shot, not in shot at all or are juxtaposed against moments where I’ve given them direction via chat. The images are also a study of the influence of technology in art and sexuality today.
Although Cam Girls maybe subject to objectification, it cannot be denied that women are capable of re-structuring the culture around them via their use of technology and business.
