The Ice Street Project engages residents of Tierney House, a homeless health accommodation service, to take and exhibit photographs of their local area. The project promotes emotional healing for some of the most vulnerable and marginalised members of our community, giving them a voice through photography to connect with their creativity and learn new skills.
Tierney House offers short term accommodation for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness. It supports them to actively engage in healthcare and access health services of their choice. Residents stay an average of two weeks, and the service accommodates over two hundred people per year.
Operating since 2015, the Ice St Project invites volunteer photographers to accompany Tierney House residents on a walk around their city to take photos using simple point and shoot cameras. For many residents, it’s a chance to document their city through their unique perspective, as often long term residents in the City of Sydney without tenancy or homeownership.

The artists involved in The Ice St Project are all experiencing homelessness within the inner city of Sydney. For some, this project was the first time they used a camera and took photographs. Whilst at Tierney House and engaging in this project, many participants received treatment for a range of complex health needs. Adult men and women of all ages residing in the accommodation were invited to participate in The Ice St Project. Their names are withheld for privacy and safety reasons.
