The Head On Student Award is open to all K-12 Australian school students

Entry fee only $1 per image

Finalists will be exhibited in Head On Photo Festival 2021 and a printed catalogue. All Awards have a dedicated exhibition webpage.

Prizes and exposure

Over 2,000 people attended the 2019 Head On Photo Festival launch, where the Head On Photo Award winners were announced.

The Head On Photo Awards exhibitions receive large visitation across key Festival venues and have toured nationally and internationally. The Awards have dedicated exhibition webpages.

In 2020, the Festival pivoted online, and 9,600 people around the world viewed the livestreamed Festival launch and announcement of winners. Finalists shared $70,000 prize pool including $30,500 in cash.

Liz Ham, Gary Grealy and Meg Hewitt share their unique styles of portraiture and professional tips. Coming from different photography backgrounds, they will discuss their individual techniques to inform and inspire.

Selection Process

Work is judged anonymously; no identifying details of the photographer will be visible to the judges to ensure that the work is selected on creative merit alone.

Judging Panel

The judging panel is comprised of leaders in the Australian and international photography communities. It represents all aspects of the photography world, including curators, picture editors, photographers, educators and other industry professionals.
